WALKING WITH THE EXCLUDED
By Julie Edwards, CEO, Jesuit Social Services

I’m pleased to announce that Jesuit Social Services is establishing The Justice Project, which will consolidate and strengthen our near 50 years of programmes, research and advocacy to trial and deliver new solutions in both youth and adult justice, to draw on and also contribute to contemporary research that can inform a more enlightened way forward, and to advocate passionately for the necessary changes that will reduce harm and make us all safer.
Our aim is for each state and territory across Australia to commit to evidence-based approaches that prevent offending, to prison environments that prevent re-offending, and to practise models that understand and address the drivers of offending behaviour. We know that presenting governments and the community with evidence-based solutions is only part of the answer. We also want to change the conversation about our justice systems and about people who offend. We want to change hearts and minds, and we need your help for that.
So, if you are drawn to help us, I’d really appreciate your support for this initiative. As you can imagine, this is another one of those unpopular needs that we are addressing. It’s not on everyone’s front of mind to do something about this. I feel confident that with your backing, we can achieve positive change and create a justice system that works for the entire community.
