Principal of Saint Ignatius' College Adelaide retires

Saint Ignatius’ College, Adelaide has announced that Principal, Peter Coffey, will retire at the end of 2022.

Last week, Saint Ignatius’ College, Adelaide announced that their Principal, Peter Coffey will retire from at the end of 2022. After five years in the role of Principal and 28 years as a member of staff, Peter was appointed as the first lay Principal in 2018.

In a letter to the school community announcing Mr Coffey’s retirement, College Board Chair Suzanne Le Mire and Jesuit Education Australia Chair Beth McConnell paid tribute to his contributions to the life of the school community.

“Peter’s contribution to the life of the College has been outstanding, and the College is extremely thankful for his years of service. During his time at the College, Peter has exercised significant leadership in religious, pastoral, academic and co-curricular programs. He supported the consolidation of co-education, the transition of Year Seven to the Senior School, and several major building projects.

“Peter’s deep commitment to the Ignatian mission has characterised his work over many years. As Principal, he has overseen the transition to new governance arrangements for the College, the delivery of a new strategic plan, continued growth in enrolments, the development of a new leadership team, the implementation of new pastoral care strategies and continued the enhancement of the College’s overall infrastructure. He has shown exemplary leadership throughout the uncertainties and challenges of COVID-19. Peter has always been a humble and inspiring leader who has kept the care and well-being of students and staff at the heart of all he has done in his various roles at the College.”

Australian Jesuit Provincial Fr Quyen Vu also praised Mr Coffey’s commitment to the Ignatian mission.

“We are extremely fortunate to have had the benefit of his ministry. His deep commitment to Catholic education and the Ignatian mission and his ability to realise that vision in action have characterised his work over many years,” he said.

The Saint Ignatius’ College Board will now commence a broad search for Peter’s successor in consultation with Jesuit Education Australia.
