 SHOWING THE WAY TO GOD

By Brigitte McDonald, Deputy Principal of St Columba’s College in Essendon

Walking the Australian Ignatian Trail from Kapunda to Sevenhill in South Australia was an unforgettable experience that combined physical journeying with deep spiritual reflection.

We were fortunate to have Jan FitzPatrick and Michael Bertie leading us on this journey. The trail, blessed with glorious weather, led tour pilgrims through picturesque farmlands, lush vineyards and the serene beauty of Australian bushland. Each step on this path invited moments of prayer and contemplation, providing an opportunity to connect with the divine while surrounded by nature’s splendour. We pilgrims were blessed to have time to practise the Ignatian way of finding God in all things.

The trail not only offered time for personal reflection but also for enjoying the companionship of fellow pilgrims. People from diverse backgrounds came together, each bringing their unique stories, perspectives and respective spiritual journeys. We shared experiences of walking this sacred path which fostered a sense of community, where meaningful conversations and shared silences created bonds that enriched my soul.

Our pilgrimage led us to Sevenhill, where a serene and historic retreat centre run by Jesuit and Ignatian Spirituality Australia (JISA) embodies the rich heritage of the Jesuits in Australia. Founded in 1851, it stands as one of the oldest religious sites in the region. The historic monastery building is nestled amidst rolling hills and expansive vineyards, which contribute to its tranquil atmosphere. It was also a pleasure to partake in the wine that is produced at Sevenhill’s working winery. The vineyards surrounding the monastery are testament to the Jesuits’ dedication to their craft, with vines that have been carefully tended for over a century.

The Australian Ignatian Trail was as much about the inner landscape as it was about the outer one — a pilgrimage where the land and spirit were intertwined, leading to a deeper understanding of ourselves and a greater appreciation of the world around us.
