Father, forgive me

On a hot summer day exactly a year ago, there was a rare photo opportunity in tranquil surroundings. But the dilemma was: to shoot or not to shoot?

On Wednesday 24 January 2024, the third day of the JCAP (Jesuit Conference of Asia Pacific) Major Superiors Assembly at Peter Canisius House in Sydney, the weather had been getting progressively warmer all day. There is a person sitting in total solitude in the verdant garden, about 40 metres away. It is Fr General Arturo Sosa SJ in quiet contemplation. Just by chance, he is wearing a dark green shirt, and he is surrounded by several variations of green – the freshly mown grassy expanse, a selection of pine trees, a crepe myrtle and of course the hybridised elm in the foreground, with its weeping branches forming an inverted bowl of serenity. Later that day, when shown the image, Fr General breaks into a broad smile and says, “That’s OK.”
