SHOWING THE WAY TO GOD
Fr Quyen Vu SJ, Australian Provincial
This month, on the Feast of Australia’s patron, St Mary of the Cross MacKillop, Australian Jesuit, Matthew Pinson SJ, was ordained a priest. The day was one of great joy.
Fr Matthew has responded to God’s call to live a life of service in the world, sharing his love for Jesus Christ with those he encounters.
Prior to joining the Jesuits, Fr Matthew received a doctorate in physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). In many contemporary debates, faith and science are often set against each other as if they were in conflict. As a living witness to the harmony of faith and science, Fr Matthew will begin his priestly ministry while continuing his work in academic science. He generously lives out the Jesuit commitment to engaging the life of the mind and to sharing the Gospel within contemporary culture.
Recent Popes, including Pope Leo, have called on Jesuits to be at the world’s frontiers, including the intellectual frontiers. We have a great living tradition of missioning men like Fr Matthew to engage in dialogue in places that might be inaccessible to others, but where a Christian voice will do so much good. Such missions draw on our profound love of the Church, and a desire to share her message of Christ’s love in every corner of our culture.
If you are a young man, seeking to serve in a world that deeply needs thoughtful and faithful witnesses, have you considered joining us? Perhaps it is time to bring this question to prayer with the Lord, and to consider reaching out to our Vocations Director.
